Automation is a defined action or workflow that runs from a clear trigger and known rules, usually without a person doing each step by hand.
Automation moves work through a known path.
A form is submitted, so a record is created. A deal reaches a stage, so a task is assigned. A report is due on Monday, so the right numbers are gathered and sent for review.
Automation is strongest when the trigger is clear, the rule is known, and the result can happen the same way each time. It may use AI, but it does not require AI. The important part is that the business already knows what should happen next.
How Automation Differs From Skills and Agents
An automation runs a defined step or sequence.
A skill prepares a specific kind of work from company context, such as drafting a proposal section or reviewing a lead against fit criteria.
An agent carries a role over time. They may use automations and skills, but they also have responsibilities, access limits, review paths, and a rhythm for when they work.
